About this work

Pixel Spiral presents an abstract, turning composition built up entirely from small square and rectangular planes of colour. The forms are distorted into a spiral towards the centre, creating a strong illusion of movement and depth. The palette is dominated by purple, golden yellow and deep blue, which alternate rhythmically. Through the repetition of the blocks and the turning structure the image seems to swirl, as though you were looking into a visual whirlpool. The edges are crisper and more grid-like, while the centre looks looser and more dynamic. The whole balances between order and chaos: the geometric precision of the squares set against the flowing, almost hypnotic rotation. The painting evokes associations with optical art (op art), digital patterns and kinetic energy, and invites the viewer to follow the centre again and again.
