Marbled Quadrants

About this work

Marbled Quadrants presents an abstract composition in four equal fields, like a mosaic or framework, in which each field is filled with flowing, marble-like patterns. The forms seem to move like liquid or molten glass, with soft waves running into one another.

Each quadrant has a colour mood of its own:

upper left is dominated by cool blues and turquoises, evoking calm and depth;

upper right shows warm reds and magentas, full of energy and emotion;

lower left we see earthy oranges and purples, giving warmth and layering;

lower right is dominated by fresh greens and yellows, suggestive of growth and vitality.

Despite these differences the four parts together form a single whole. The lines run on visually from one field to the next, as though the painting were one great flow only temporarily divided into compartments. The work balances between order and chaos: the crisp grid set against the free, organic movement of colour and form.

The painting evokes associations with natural forces such as water, lava or the veining of marble, but also with emotions and moods that can exist side by side. It invites the viewer to keep looking, to discover new details each time and to make their own connections between the parts.
