Optical Sphere presents an abstract, almost optical composition in which colour, repetition and depth take centre stage. The image is dominated by a spherical structure that seems to float or to draw inwards, built up from a fine grid of square planes. Each plane has subtle gradations of colour in vivid tones such as green, purple, blue, yellow and red, giving the whole a vibrating, digital presence. The grid lines curve along with the spherical form, evoking a strong sense of three-dimensionality and movement. It seems as though the colours were being drawn towards the centre, as though the painting depicted a visual whirlpool or field of energy. At the edges the grid distorts further, reinforcing the illusion that space is curving and leading the eye inwards.
The work balances between order and dynamism: the crisp geometry of the grid set against the playful, almost psychedelic combinations of colour. The painting invites the viewer to look longer, because the image seems continually to change and move depending on where you direct your gaze, holding everything in equilibrium.
