About this work

Transparent Structure presents an abstract composition built up from transparent planes of colour, stripes and textures that overlap one another. The image is divided into a grid-like structure, but the boundaries are soft and blurred, so that everything seems to run into everything else.

The colours are intense and varied: vivid green, yellow, red, blue, purple and pink alternate and mix in layers. Vertical stripes suggest movement and rhythm, while curved forms and diagonal lines recall roads, bends or currents. The underlying texture has something raw and organic about it, as though paint had been smeared out, sanded or lived in. The whole evokes a sense of dynamism and urban energy, as though you were looking down from above at a crossing of roads, light and movement. The painting invites continued looking, because new combinations of colour and layers of depth keep becoming visible.
