About this work

Chequered Abyss presents a powerful optical illusion in which a black-and-white chequerboard pattern is distorted into a deep, turning funnel. The plane seems to break open and to suck the viewer inside. At the centre glows an intense red area that acts as an energetic heart or core and contrasts strongly with the severe black and white around it. Out of that core rises a spiralling, cone-like structure, likewise built up from the chequerboard motif.
